GOFITJO Loves WiseWear Collection

Joanne Encarnacion, aka GOFITJO, is a fitness and lifestyle blogger whose main focus is to convey how important achieving self-love and self-confidence through fitness and wellness is for all the hardworking women out there.

In addition to managing her fitness/lifestyle blog 24/7, she is also the mother to two daughters and in the process of becoming a certified health and nutrition coach. If that doesn’t scream #GirlBoss, we don’t know what does! Joanne took the time out of her busy schedule to let us know more about the inspiring woman behind GOFITJO, her advice for women juggling it all, and what she loves most about her Duchess smart bracelet.

1.Tell us more about you, your blog, GOFITJO, and how your fitness journey began.

Hello my name is Joanne Encarnacion, but I also go by Jo. I’m a fitness and lifestyle blogger from SF Bay area raising two beautiful daughters with my incredibly talented husband Jonathan. I’m currently becoming a certified health and nutrition coach and so excited to helping people design their lives around movement and proper nourishment. My life wasn’t always this way though. I’ve been working for as long as I can remember and when you’ve focused a lot of your energy on your career and building a life sometimes your own health gets put on the backburner. A little over 3 years ago I found myself battling with depression and realizing that it was caused by my lack of self care and focus on my health and wellbeing. I was getting ready for a Sunday family outing with my little family and as I was checking out myself for the final time in my daughter’s full length mirror, my daughter Airis, who was 9 years old at the time said to me, “Mom you look so pretty.” I quickly snapped at her and said, “No I’m not; I’m fat and ugly.” The look on her face is one I will never forget, I crushed her heart. In her eyes I was her queen, the most beautiful woman she had ever seen. She took off running into the hallway upset with me. This was my “aha” moment. It all of a sudden clicked, how could I be the example of a strong woman if I didn’t see that in myself? How could I tell her she’s beautiful, capable and talented if I couldn’t even see that in me? This is when I knew things had to change. I started to change my relationship with food and exercise and began to truly see the effects of a healthier lifestyle that had fitness and nourishment as it’s cornerstone. What began as a weight loss journey became a lifelong journey of self development, growth, and continuous practice of self-love.

2.How do you juggle all of the responsibilities of being a full-time fitness/lifestyle blogger and a mother of two kids?

It takes a lot of support from my partner in crime my husband, organization skills, and a lot of heart and hustle. Aside from full-time fitness/lifestyle blogger I’m also studying to become a certified health and nutrition coach, which has got me spending most of my free time hitting the books. As the former Director of Curation at VSCO I’ve always had to juggle a pretty full plate especially working in the start up world. Part of that juggle is understanding that balance is individual and doesn’t look the same for everyone. I live off of my Google Calendar so everything from my workouts, family events, school tests, blogging, content/collaboration deadlines, my husband’s work calendar, and my social calendar are all in one place. If it’s not there, I get a little lost. I’ve learned to embrace life in the present, taking it hour by hour at a time. This approach has really helped me take control of a busy day and keep things from feeling to overwhelmed. Having an adaptable approach to a jam packed calendar is truly the key to balance.

3.What was your Aha! moment that propelled you into the world of fitness blogging?

High school was a tough period of my life. My folks moved around a lot so my relationships with friends were constantly shifting and changing. It always seemed as if my foundations were always shifting and because of that I turned to journaling and writing. I found myself sharing my struggles of growing up with depression to my church community during high school and its when I realized at a young age that sharing our stories of struggle was the the best way to heal and build a sense of belonging. When I started my fitness journey I knew I needed support. It was my first time embarking on something this big and I knew how much I succeed in it. At the time I shared my fitness journey on Instagram, I used it as a daily journal. About a year into my fitness journey I decided to start a blog and one thing really lead to another. Now it’s become a destination for inspiration and connection for some and it’s awesome!

4.What would be the biggest piece of advice you could give to someone who is struggling with low self-esteem?

Stop comparing yourself to others and remember that you’re amazing as you are. The hardest thing is that often times the causes of self-esteem issues are lack of self-worth. The best thing to do is to do a quick inventory on your life and the things that matter the most and bring you happiness and joy. Then ask yourself how do you get more of that into your life.

5.We know that a healthy mind equals a healthy body. With that being said, how do you keep a healthy mind/outlook while focusing on your fitness goals?

I practice gratitude daily. Most of my workouts begin with a 5 minute warm-up during that time instead of focusing on trying to turn on the “beast mode”, I focus on the things I’m grateful for such as an able body and my overall health. There are others in this world who are struggling to get out of bed due to some illness or those who were born unable to walk. Finding gratitude in the things we have currently have always allowed me to have a much more healthier approach to what I do in life especially my fitness goals.

6. Being so busy must take a toll on you personally. Tell us some of your favorite ways you like to unwind.

Some of my favorite ways to unwind include a workout, but in the moments that I can’t get that in or I’ve already done that for the day retreating to my bedroom diffusing essential oils while I meditate get me grounded immediately. Some other favorites are warm epsom salt baths, quiet dinners with the family, and walking around Target alone (yes sometimes this is one way I unwind).

7. As a mother of two young daughters, what is your advice to them on staying healthy and having a positive body image?

Often times in our house we focus a lot of characteristics that are not physical. My youngest who is 6 will point out the things she loves about her older sister’s personality. My eldest daughter is 12 and that is such a crucial age to start laying down the foundation to building a positive and healthy lifestyle. Because my daughter witnessed my transformation and was the catalyst to it, I don’t really give her advice that’s any different than I give a grown woman. We talk openly at home about the changes happening in her body at this age so that it doesn’t become a “weird” thing for her growing up. I think often times we underestimate the influence we have as adults on the younger generation and instead of giving them advice, we need to simply live by example.

8. We know you’ve been wearing your Duchess in gold. Tell us what feature you enjoy the most.

I love the simplicity of the design and the discreet notification alerts. I’ve gotten so many compliments on it as a bracelet and it always throws people off when I say it’s an activity tracker and tech device.

9. WiseWear is all about losing the screen, not the moment. Since most of your day is probably spent in front of a screen, how do you find ways to disconnect?

I set pretty firm boundaries around my tech time. During my workout sessions my phone is typically on do not disturb so that I can put my intention and time into my workout session. When I’m out with friends I rely on my tech devices like Wisewear to send me discreet notifications so that I can focus on the people I’m with. We all have a tendency to get caught up in documenting the moments we live in, but sometimes it’s about just living in the moment. And that is something I try my best to truly honor.

10.What advice would you give other women who are trying to balance motherhood, a career and a healthy lifestyle?

If there is anything I’ve learned from all the women mentors that I’ve had in my life, they are all simply trying to figure it out. We are all just wingin’ it and sometimes the best way to own your life and be the #girlboss in all areas of your life is learning that you can’t do it all and accepting that things won’t be perfect all the time, but you’re doing your absolute best.

A New Era of Wearables with Iris Apfel

WWR-IrisBanner-1170x500_blogslider

She’s bold. She’s fierce. She’s the 94-year-old style icon who’s designing your next wearable. Meet Iris Apfel, the new face of WiseWear.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this feisty fashionista, you’ve probably come across her unforgettable face at some point – it’s often adorned with those iconic, thick-rimmed spectacles. Or you’ve probably heard someone mention her as “that lady with the glasses.” Perhaps you’ve seen her charming documentary IRIS (if you haven’t, it’s now being featured on Netflix).

For the past 60-something years, Iris has graced the world with her artistic talent and impeccable taste. Her career set off in 1950 when she and her husband launched Old World Weavers, a restorational textile company. Together they traveled the world, shopping for fabrics while simultaneously building Iris’ eccentric collection of one-of-a-kind accessories and fashion pieces. She also served as an interior designer for the White House for nearly half a century, working with the wives of nine presidents.

Well affiliated with the New York interior design crowd, Iris eventually grabbed the attention of a curator from the Met Museum, who caught wind of her ostentatious wardrobe. He asked if she would create an art exhibition showcasing her personal collection of fashion and accessories accumulated throughout the years. It was this exhibition, dubbed Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Apfel Collection, that set Iris apart as something very rare and far from ordinary. Today, she continues to inspire people of all ages to adopt their own unique style as the truest form of self-expression.

This is one of many reasons why we wanted to work with Iris. Her years of wisdom and wit make her the perfect example of a modern day woman – confident, beautiful, smart and independent. To put it in other words, she’s a true symbol for beauty and brains. If you’ve seen her documentary, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about.

In the documentary, you might also recall Iris touching on the frequent, sometimes fatal, issue of her friends falling. The self-proclaimed “geriatric starlet” has undergone two hip operations herself – one after tripping over the hem of an Oscar de la Renta dress at a Paris fashion shoot. This recurring topic of seniors at risk of falling was one that sparked an interest with Iris, as soon as she learned that our founder’s grandfather had experienced such a fatal fall (read about it in this Fast Company article).

His passing was what inspired Dr. Wilmink to start WiseWear. As stated in the article, Wilmink’s original plan was to create a hearing aid that could measure when the user was at risk of falling, and would react by telling the user to sit down. Although the hearing aid never came to fruition, one thing led to another – ultimately resulting in an antenna system that could transmit Bluetooth signals through metal. This is now the breakthrough technology that fuels our Socialite smart bracelets.

Although Socialite can’t detect falls (just yet), it can track your activity, provide vibrating mobile notifications, and send distress signals to your loved ones in times of potential danger. The unique safety feature is one that Iris values most, stating that, “something like this can alert those who care about me if I take a flop because falling can be very dangerous, particularly when you get old in age.”

Lavish and lovely: a shot from her latest documentary, IRIS, shot and directed by Albert Maysles.

By tapping the bracelet to your custom sequence (i.e. three taps), Socialite sends a discreet text message to your pre-approved list of contacts, notifying them of your exact location. Beyond falls, you can also tap the bracelet when feeling vulnerable, threatened, or endangered. Click here to read more about how the safety feature works.

During our one-on-one interview, Iris made a point that, “this is not just technology that’s useful for elderly people; there are a lot of young people that can benefit as well. The Socialite bracelet can measure your activity, how active you are, and all kinds of good stuff. We don’t want any couch potatoes in the crowd.”

At 94 years young, the slender muse is still always on-the-go, flying from international fashion shows to photo shoots and elite social events. She admits that she is very active and doesn’t sit still very much.

On another note, Iris also believes that the “de-teching” aspect of Socialite will serve useful, with vibrating mobile notifications and lack of a distracting LED screen. She once said, “People are so tied up in the worst parts of technology these days. They don’t use their imagination.

If we’ve learned one thing, it’s that imagination is vital to spark creativity and innovation. Iris has preserved a unique childlike quality to imagine a world of endless possibilities – and it’s unlike anything we’ve encountered before with any other fashion designer.

With Iris by our side, we’re feeling more inspired than ever to design a fresh line of luxury wearables and introduce it to the high-fashion world. Indeed, technology is a beautiful thing and wearing it should be too. Cheers to a new era of fashion-first wearables that truly speak style.

New Year, New You

WWR-032-A4-NewYears-1024x512

Ah, yes. It’s that special time of the year when you make a checklist of all the things deemed more or less necessary to better yourself. For those of you who turn your heads away from resolutions, don’t fight it! Think of it as an annual performance review for yourself – focus on your previous year’s successes and failures, extract a few key takeaways and use them to develop your goals for 2016. What would you like to change about yourself? How can you make 2016 the best year of your life?

If you’re still drawing a blank, have no fear! We’re here to help. At WiseWear, our goal is to empower people just like you to live the happy, healthy, balanced lifestyle you deserve. We’ve compiled a quick guide on how to achieve 5 common overarching New Year’s resolutions with the help of Socialite!

  1. I want to… stay in shape and be more active. The most popular resolution that may sound easy to make, but might just be the hardest to keep. To stay in tip-top shape, studies suggest that the bare minimum is to complete one form of physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day. It doesn’t have to be strenuous, but it should ideally make you sweat. The secret ingredient to this resolution is consistency. Ever see those gym rats jotting in their fitness diaries? Logging your workouts and number of reps can help keep you motivated, but in this day and age (ahem, 2016), there’s no need for that! Our Socialite smart bracelet tracks all your activity and conveniently stores everything on the accompanying mobile app, so you can monitor your progress throughout the day. Track your daily step count (aim for 10,000 a day!), distance traveled, and calories burned. And look fabulous while doing it!
  2.

  3. I want to… get more sleep. This one may sound odd, but we can’t stress enough the importance of catching your Z’s. Think about your body’s fuel like your smartphone’s battery – you need a full night’s charge to last all day. Realize that while you’re sleeping, your body is still hard at work, repairing your heart, blood vessels, cells, and internal organs. Lack of sleep can increase your appetite, slow down your metabolism, and dramatically increase your chances of becoming overweight. Not to mention, lack of sleep affects your appearance, giving way to more breakouts, premature wrinkles, and dark undereye circles. Aim for at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night. Our Socialite smart bracelet also happens to track your time active/inactive, so you’ll know exactly how many hours of shuteye you’re actually getting.
  4.

  5. I want to… be more productive. Between work, family, friends, and you-time, it’s safe to say we’re constantly being pulled in different directions. To make it worse, we also live in the age of distractions. Step one to productivity is to eliminate those distractions. The biggest one is most likely your smartphone, a.k.a. the gateway to a world of distractions (i.e. social media, online shopping, unnecessary calls and texts, the list goes on). Throw a Socialite smart bracelet on your wrist and put your phone down! Socialite provides users with real-time mobile notifications, such as incoming calls, texts, emails, alarms, and calendar reminders, in the form of gentle vibrations. You can manage your notifications and customize your vibration patterns on the mobile app, giving you the power to choose what comes through. This feature helps you stay connected without having to constantly reach for your phone. Now that you’ve pushed your distractions out the door, be sure to build out an easy-to-follow schedule and create to-do lists. Hold yourself accountable and be sure to cross each and every task off your list! We promise: you’ll feel empowered and productive.
  6.

  7. I want to be… independent and confident. Something that we all strive to work on, especially as a modern day woman. There are countless ways to boost your self-esteem and independence. Here are a few for starters… take care of yourself, dress to impress, think positively, set your goals & principles and live by them, always be willing to learn, and most importantly, understand that you are in control of your own fate. We designed all of our Socialite smart bracelets with one goal in mind: to make women feel their most confident on the inside and out. Beyond its ability to turn heads and make a bold fashion statement, Socialite also provides users with a sense of security by allowing them to send a distress signal to loved ones in times of potential danger. By tapping on Socialite, one can send a discreet text message to their pre-approved list of contacts, along with optional geolocation and sound/video recording of their surroundings. Whether you’re going for a morning run before sunrise or walking through an empty parking garage at midnight, Socialite gives you the power to do it with confidence.
  8.

  9. I want to… spend more quality time with family and friends. Undoubtedly one of the most important resolutions everyone should strive to make. Life moves fast, and it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle of things. To state the obvious, it’s important to make time for your family and friends no matter how hectic your schedule may be. Again, in this age of digital distractions, it’s become increasingly common to see families replace the company of each other in exchange for their smartphones. We admit: it can be rather painful to sit through dinner without picking up our phones at least once. Socialite’s “de-teching” features help alleviate this problem, with the absence of a distracting LED screen and vibrating mobile notifications. By filtering out unnecessary noise, these features helps you lose the screen, not the moment. Yet, you’re still able to stay connected to the people and things that matter most. So make an effort to get rid of your phone and any other digital distractions in proximity, and live in the moment.

Last week, we had the honor and pleasure of attending TEDMED 2015 in Palm Springs, CA, along with 1,000 other delegates from 147 different countries. Needless to say, it was an eye-opening experience to collaborate with innovators from every field imagined. From self-made billionaires to mad scientists and the U.S. Surgeon General (a.k.a. “America’s Doctor”), we feel fortunate to have exchanged ideals with some of the brightest people in the health and medicine community. At the end of the day, we felt inspired to continue innovating, creating, and collaborating with those who share the same passion as us. If you missed TEDMED this year, have no fear – here’s a quick recap of our time spent at this special event!

Feel the Difference with Socialite

WWR-032-D3-Differentiation-1024x512

From Socialite’s
tech features to fashion & design elements, we’ve covered a whole lot of ground this past month. As you can (hopefully) tell, we’ve dedicated so much time and brainpower into creating the perfect wearable for all women alike.

Since the inception of wearable tech, consumers have been limited to a narrow selection of wearables; most of which have paid little attention to aesthetics. First generation wearables are clunky, rubber, with colors that are either too masculine or too vibrant. Can a modern day woman get some variety up in here?! Thinking from such a consumer’s perspective, we bent over backwards to incorporate the most important details and features into an all-in-one product that speaks for itself.

Because the modern day woman is one of many things (class, independence, beauty and brains, to name a few), we tackled the great challenge of creating a solution that would help her achieve this ever-delicate balance. Behold, the Socialite Collection!

To top off this month’s theme of #DiscoverWiseWear, we’ve compiled our thoughts on what sets Socialite apart from others in the exciting newfound world of fashion-first wearables.

  • Breakthrough Technology
    • We combined the latest in ultra-small accelerometer technology and motion processing units into a small, light, but powerful package that could fit within a bracelet. Naturally, being all metal, the bracelet generated a challenging technological obstacle – how to get the radio signal out of the bracelet. We engineered an innovative solution using the bracelet itself (being electrically conductive) as part of the antenna, resulting in two U.S. patent applications. The advanced sensors are housed in the BRAIN component (bottom half of bracelet), offering the most accurate activity tracking and seamless two-way communication between the user and the device.
  • Equal Parts Function + Fashion
    • Instead of limiting the consumer to one primary function (i.e. Fitbit and activity tracking, Ringly and mobile notifications), we combined three meaningful features into one bracelet. This includes activity tracking, mobile notifications, and distress messaging. Each feature plays a fundamental role in most users’ lifestyles, for their sake of health & wellness, constant connectivity, and safety. While we do specialize in sensing technologies, we also have a strong focus on design and aesthetics – simply put, making things truly wearable.
    • To us, fashion is equally as important as function… especially in the realm of wearables. What’s the point if you’re not crazy about wearing it? Wearables can serve many purposes, but the one most overlooked is its ability to serve as a form of self-expression. As mentioned in Socialite Design Elements and Inspiration, “we wanted to design pieces that would be fitting for all kinds of lifestyles and spent a lot of time considering how and when the bracelet would be worn throughout the day.” We think the Socialite is perfect for ladies who are always hustling on-the-go, are rather health-conscious, jump from work to working out, desire to stay connected without the extra noise, etc. No matter where you go or what outfit you’re wearing, Socialite is fitting for all occasions.
  • High-Quality Materials
    • Each Socialite bracelet is made of brass and plated with precious metals, such as gold and palladium. Our fine, nonporous metal materials are made to maintain its quality and shine over time. Such materials also provide a more intimate and luxurious feel for users. We also designed Socialite to fit any person with a wrist circumference of 6.5 inches or less, so the bracelet has enough free space to move in sync with your body.

  • Interchangeability: Mix-and-Match to Your Style
    • All bracelets in the Socialite Collection are interchangeable with one another, so you can separate the top portion from the bottom and change styles as often as you’d like. You have the ability to mix and match different styles with the simple detachment of the top and bottom halves using a small screwdriver. Purchase different platings and style to build your very own Socialite Collection.
  • Made to Fit Your Lifestyle
    • Socialite’s ability to mix and match is one way you can customize the bracelet to accommodate your outfit or mood. You can also customize and manage the following settings on the accompanying Socialite mobile app:
      • Pre-approved list of contacts
      • Vibration patterns
      • Touch patterns
      • Types of notifications
      • Monitor your activity throughout the day (i.e. number of steps, distance traveled, time active/inactive, calories burned)

Socialite Design Elements & Inspiration

WWR-032-C4-Schematic-1024x512

Earlier this month, we finally got a chance to sit down with Lee Chan, our Chief Fashion & Design Advisor, and interviewed her on the design elements and inspiration behind the Socialite Collection. We compiled the best of her thoughts in Q&A form. Enjoy!

Q: Where and how did you start the design process for the Socialite Collection?

A: We first started out with the basics by fully understanding who the user is, what she truly wants, and what she would gravitate towards in terms of aesthetics, form, and value. Wearing jewelry is a form of self-expression. It can be considered a rather sensual experience because of how close it touches the skin. Bearing this concept in mind, we approached the design process with a strong emphasis on how it would feel to wear the bracelet. Would it be comfortable and versatile enough to wear all day long? Could we create a universal fit that would accommodate the curvature of all wrists? Such an intimate and tactile approach involved a number of steps, including hand sketching, wax casting, 3D printing, and steel mold injection. It was certainly a grueling process of trial and error… we cycled through several iterations before settling on the perfect designs that embodied the right elements of comfort and sophistication.

Q: What inspired the designs of the bracelets?

A: The inspiration for the Socialite Collection spanned from both history and geometric forms. Our infatuation with Italian links and interlocking geometries served as the ultimate foundation for the Calder. We incorporated fun and tasteful elements of symmetry so that the bracelet looks stunning from virtually every angle. The connected links represent unity between beauty and technology, bringing the best of both worlds together into one harmonious piece. The design was inspired to represent community, passion, and balance. The Calder has the most unique geometric form out of the collection. The Duchess was created out of a modern translation of traditional insignia jewelry. There is a long history associated with the insignia ring, often used as a personal signature for rulers & leaders and/or a symbol of family heritage. We were interested in playing around with this concept and eventually translated the ring design into a bracelet. The rectangular flat top served as the perfect face to expose a pop of color. The Duchess serves as a token of remembrance, symbolizing traditional values of love, strength, and promise. This style is perfect for those who seek a blend of modern and traditional detail. And finally, for the Kingston, we reimagined the WiseWear logo, with the intent to symbolize the company’s philosophy of creating beautiful things with true purpose. The design is rather modern and sleek, with the subtlest of details. If you look at the bracelet from a side angle, you will see a deep “W” indentation that replicates the WiseWear logo. It’s also a faint representation of a heartbeat, which symbolizes the generosity of life and wellness. The metal pearls add some texture to its smooth metallic surface, adding a touch of contemporary elegance.

Q: Were there any specific design features and requirements that you had to conceptualize around? Any specific objectives you were trying to achieve?

A: We knew that the beauty of the technology could only be concealed and packaged into a beautiful accessory. Therefore, our goal was to create something that was truly beautiful, versatile, comfortable, and luxurious – something that could instantly make a woman feel confident from the moment she put it on. We wanted to design pieces that would be fitting for all kinds of lifestyles and spent a lot of time considering how and when the bracelet would be worn throughout the day. I believe the Socialite Collection has a strong degree of versatility, in the sense that you can wear it to the office, to your son’s soccer game, to a girls’ night out, or to a fancy date night.

Q: Describe how the woman comes into play.

A: I truly believe that when a woman finds a piece of jewelry, it’s an emotional connection with the beauty of the design and how the jewelry makes her feel. We tuned into those feelings throughout the design process and wanted to stay true to the customer’s desire of identifying with something that’s truly wearable. We wanted her to see the collection and immediately imagine herself wearing it in a variety of settings.

Q: How do you feel about the integration of fashion and technology? Where do you see it going?

A: The integration of fashion and technology, aka “fashionology”, is incredibly important because the world needs more products that wear and function well. Offering wearable products that function well, but lack in the comfort and style department quickly defeats the purpose. Once something is worn on the body, it becomes an object of fashion. The language of fashion is one of identity and value; and it’s something that technology is now learning to speak. Although technology may already be fully integrated in the consumer’s everyday life, I am confident that it will become more seamless, especially with a growing focus in fashion and design. The marketplace for fashion-first wearables is bound to skyrocket in the next few years. I look forward to seeing how engineers and designers will collaborate and innovate.

Q: What’s your favorite part about the Socialite Collection?

A: That’s a difficult question to answer… there are many aspects to appreciate. I love that these bracelets combine the best of technology and style. It’s unlike anything else I’ve seen in the market. It’s a true representation of both beauty and brains, which is typically deemed unattainable. Socialite defies those odds and empowers women to have it all. I also love the versatility of the collection, and the fact that all bracelets are interchangeable with one another. Playing on the metaphorical expression, the formation of the bracelet is actually made up of two components – the BEAUTY and the BRAIN. Users have the ability to mix and match different styles with the simple detachment of the top and bottom halves. The bottom half is called the BRAIN, which houses the advanced sensing technology. The top half is called the BEAUTY and is purely jewelry with no technical components. Women have the choice to buy multiple BEAUTYs and can assemble them to the BRAIN in no time with a small screwdriver.
